One person has died and more than 20 others are injured after a bomb blast at a crowded bus stop in Jerusalem, Israeli officials say.Jerusalem hadn't seen a bombing in years until a package exploded outside the city's central bus station today, wounding more than 20.The explosion was apparently caused by a bomb left in a bag near the stop. This was the first such bombing in Jerusalem in over four years. No group has come forward to claim responsibility.The threat of terrorist bombings have been a fact of life in Israel for as long as I can remember.I remember being a kid and being afraid of going there. I remember talking to Israelis about the anxiety of living in a place like Jerusalem, or even Tel Aviv, where a terrorist nightmare could happen at any time.It turns out, as we learned in 2001, that we all live in a place where something terrible could happen at any time.
Maybe there’s something we can learn about living with uncertainty from people who have always accepted uncertainty as a given.As the minister spoke, a group of Israelis shouted "Death to Arabs.’’While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, it came just hours after the southern Israeli city of Beersheva was hit by two Katyusha missiles from Palestinian militants in Gaza – the first such attack since the Gaza war ended two years ago.
Though the Jerusalem bombing and rockets from Gaza occurred on two different fronts, there is a chance they may be linked. On Tuesday, in response to the killing of eight Gazans by Israeli fire – including four civilians – Hamas’ military wing promised revenge. Islamic Jihad claimed responsiblilty for the rocket attacks earlier today.
